Full Definition
An Extended Reporting Period (ERP) is a provision in a claims-made policy that extends the time to report claims beyond the policy expiration date. ERPs come in two forms: basic (automatic and free, typically 30-60 days after expiration) and supplemental (purchased, providing 1-5 years or unlimited reporting). The supplemental ERP (tail) is purchased when a claims-made policy is cancelled or non-renewed, when switching carriers, or when retiring from practice. ERPs do not extend the coverage period — they only extend the reporting window for incidents that occurred during the original policy period.
