What is Binder?

A temporary insurance contract that provides coverage until the formal policy is issued.

Full Definition

A binder is a temporary insurance agreement that provides immediate coverage while the formal policy is being prepared and issued. Binders are typically issued by agents or brokers and are legally binding on the insurance company. They include the essential terms of coverage (named insured, effective date, coverage type, limits, and premium) and expire when the formal policy is issued (usually within 30-60 days). Binders are critical in time-sensitive situations such as real estate closings, construction project starts, and business acquisitions where coverage must be in force before the full policy can be prepared.
